Peter Scherrebeck (1813-1861)

Born 18 Aug 1813 in Skærbæk, Hoptrup, Haderslev. Christened "Peter Skerrebek". Son of farmer Thomas Simonsen and wife Bodild Kirsten Scherrebeck. He is regarded by many sources as the first Danish settler in California. He came to Yerba Buena in 1835. The town, at that time mexican, later became San Francisco. In 1844 he became the first police officer in the town. Later he was a tax collector and elected to the town council. He was first of all known as a carpenter and master builder. He constructed many buildings in the region of San Francisco. In 1841 he had converted to catholicism. He was married to Mary Stevenson, who died 1879. He died in 1861.
