He was born 2 Nov 1850 in Copenhagen as son of a violinmaker. In Denmark he attended the Royal Academy of Design. He emigrated to the USA arriving to New York August 1873. Several sources list 1871 as year of emigration, but censusrecords and passengerlist testify he came to the USA in 1873. He first lived in New York and 1880 he settled in Hoboken. He was a very productive artist, and it's believed that he has painted about 6000 ship portraits. In 1878 he married Mary Melania Schmidt, who was born 1856 in Massachusetts to french immigrants. He died 2 Feb 1921.
